“Great
opportunities to help others seldom come,
but small ones surround us every day.”
Sally Koch
The
members of Park Road Baptist are committed to being God’s
hands in this world. This statement represents the voice
of the church as spoken in our 2003 visioning process. Therefore,
we began a new period of intentional development of our
commitments to missions, following a three-fold strategy:
local, national, and international.
To
Serve
You will find our current mission initiatives listed below.
We welcome involvement in any of these programs and are
open to new service ideas that you may have. If you wish
to get involved, please contact the church office at 704.523.5717.
Mission
Deacons, representing each of our leadership
committees, now serve as a short-term visioning council,
and seek to discern God’s call for this congregation,
specifically as it relates to our response to the community
around us. We are committed to the goal of giving at least
10% of our operating budget to missions reaching beyond
our own campus. We have developed a “grass roots”
approach to missions, which is designed to empower members
to pursue their own passions in service. A growing portion
of our mission budget will be dedicated to member-initiated
projects of ministry. For a full understanding of our approach
to Becoming Disciples through Service, see the Commitment
Made Real document,
the result of the Vision Team’s work.
Local
mission projects include:
- Crisis
Assistance Ministry –- we host a satellite
office on our campus three days a week. Volunteers are
needed to interview candidates and do light administrative
work.
-
Habitat For Humanity –
we recently constructed a home in Avery County and are
beginning another home in Charlotte. Ongoing work with
Habitat continues. Check for opportunities in What’s
Happening.
-
PRBC Needlers – a group
of church members who share their sewing/needlepoint skills
to create items for the needy, especially for babies and
the elderly. Volunteers are needed to knit and sew. No
prior experience is necessary. We can teach you.
-
Parkview Community – members
assist by volunteering to mentor and fix meals for the
children in the Parkview after-school program. Volunteers
are needed any afternoon of the week.
-
Member Response Team –
a volunteer team which seeks to provide basic assistance
to church members (from home maintenance to financial
advice). Volunteers are placed on a list to be called
as needed.
-
Room in the Inn – every
other Saturday night for the months of the winter, we
provide housing for the homeless on our campus; Volunteers
are needed to set up, drive, cook, spend the night and
do laundry.
-
Sedgefield Tutoring –
members work with elementary school children on reading
skills one hour per week with much flexibility; volunteers
are always welcome.
-
Uptown Men’s Shelter –
members coordinate and serve a meal every other month
on Saturdays at the Uptown Men’s Shelter. Volunteers
are needed to coordinate meals, purchase food, and serve.
Other
local projects of financial support include:
Urban Ministries, Baptist Counseling Center, Winter Emergency
Shelter, ECO, Shepherd’s Center, Mecklenburg Ministries,
Friendship Trays, Uptown Men’s Shelter, Loaves and
Fishes, RAIN, and the Alzheimer’s Association.
National
project:
We are working to develop a “Disaster Relief Team,”
which would be prepared to respond in the event of a natural
disaster occurring inside the United States.
International
project:
In 2003, a PRBC delegation traveled to Cuba and formalized
a relationship with the Resurrection Baptist Church in
the Matanzas Province of Cuba. Our relationship with the
people of Resurrection Baptist Church is increasing through
communication and personal contact with their members.
It is our intent to travel to Cuba, or to bring a delegation
from Cuba to Charlotte, annually. The resolution adopted
by the church can be found by clicking
here.
